Exercise may reduce genetic risk of diabetes

A new study finds that regular exercise can help prevent diabetes, even in people who are genetically predisposed to it.

The study involved more than 59,000 people who wore activity trackers on their wrists for a week. These were all part of the UK Biobank, a large database of genetic, lifestyle and health information for her over half a million people in the UK.

After a median follow-up of nearly seven years, researchers found that people who engaged in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity for an hour or more each day were more likely to develop diabetes than those who engaged in less than five minutes of physical activity. They found a 74% lower risk of developing the disease. activity per day.

This finding holds true even among people at high genetic risk for diabetes, who are 2.4 times more likely to develop diabetes than those at low genetic risk. The study was published online on June 5, 2023. British Journal of Sports Medicine.
