An organization in the nation’s capital is working to raise awareness about the relationship between gun violence and mental health. The Jackson Federation of Teachers hosted an event at the Jackson Convention Complex on Saturday. Organizers said they want to have an open discussion with the community to find solutions and strategies to address the gun violence that directly impacts the city’s youth. “Unfortunately, more and more young people are participating in incidents such as gun violence and carjackings,” said Ebony Rice, president of the Jackson Federation of Teachers. “We hope that if we can bring more awareness to the community about what we think may be part of the root of the problem, that will help solve some of the problems. ” These highlights were released just one week after the University Point shooting. Jalen Barnes, 21, was shot to death in an apartment on JSU’s campus. Barnes turned 22 in November and was scheduled to graduate in the spring of 2024. Burns’ father said he was trying to break up a fight when he was shot. Joshua Brown, 19, and Jamison Kelly Kr. have both been arrested in connection with the shooting death of Barnes. The event also included book giveaways and free lunch for attendees. “If we all work together to come up with solutions and strategies, we are hopeful that we can put an end to the problems we face,” Rice said.JPD is active in tackling crime in the nation’s capital. These highlights come just one week after the shooting at University Pointe Apartments on the JSU campus in which Jalen Barnes, 21, was shot and killed.
Barnes turned 22 in November and was scheduled to graduate in the spring of 2024.
