Addressing mental health in the workplace aims to expand cooperation in McHenry County – Shaw Local


The McHenry County Mental Health Commission, in collaboration with NAMI McHenry County and the Suicide Prevention Task Force, announced expanded support for workplaces through training, certification and awareness. The effort was launched on Nov. 8 at the McHenry County Economic Development Corporation’s annual dinner.

Information was presented about the Bell Seal Certification, which is awarded for employer advancement in workplace mental health, and recognized McHenry County Government’s Mental Health America Bell Seal Gold Certification.

At the annual dinner, business champions were recognized and business leaders were asked to consider expanding mental health programs.

Research shows that addressing mental health in the workplace increases productivity, reduces turnover, and improves employee satisfaction. The costs of absenteeism due to mental illness can be reduced by better understanding and support for those who suffer.

Mental Health American reports that one in five U.S. adults experiences a mental illness each year. Suicide is the 12th leading cause of death in the United States, and McHenry County saw a 72% increase in suicides from 2020 to 2022.

The McHenry County Mental Health Commission, with more than 70 network providers, is dedicated to reducing suicide incidents through awareness, training, and resources for individuals and families.

Nami McHenry County provides workplace mental health and suicide prevention training to staff and employees. Workshops will be 45 minutes long on mental health (statistics, warning signs, resources) and suicide prevention on questions, persuasion and referrals.
